Millie's Story

MILLIE'S STORY

"RSPCA officers have been horrified at the condition of a pet dog abandoned on Cardigan bypass over Christmas.

The Shih Tzu pedigree dog was found to be blind from an ulcer on one eye, suffering breathing problems and abscesses on the teeth.

The dog - which was picked up by local RSPCA officer Richard Abbot on Boxing Day - is thought to have been dumped from a car.

Local county councillor and dog lover Sandra Williams said: "I think people should take a look at the picture of this dog and see what some people do to their pets. The poor thing’s coat was matted and it was totally limp and exhausted. It’s another example of an old dog being put on the road over Christmas. The RSPCA have been pleading with people not to abandon their animals. The dog was severely neglected and not cared for.The police and the RSPCA would be very interested to receive any information regarding this dog, and the owner when traced will be questioned" said Councillor Williams.

"The dog is now being cared for by the RSPCA and making a slow recovery."

Millie shortly after she was picked up
Millie was picked up from the roadside on Boxing Day December 26th and placed in a local kennel. On the 3rd of January we received a phone call from another organisation telling us that there was a Shih Tzu in a pound in Carmarthen. They would not let us pick up Millie until the 5th.

Helen Evans drove 100 miles each way in the snow and picked Millie up at 1.30pm.Seeing the state of Millie, Helen drove straight to her vet where Millie was given a pain killing injection, treatment for her eye ulcer,anti-inflammatory,anti-biotics,a parvo vaccination and a wormer.Millie was found to be blind in one eye due to an untreated eye ulcer. She had abscesses on her gums and an umbilical and inguinal hernia. She was full of worms.Helen then took Millie home bathed her and clipped off her matted coat to make her more comfortable.

She has had some teeth removed and is receiving ongoing treatment from Helen’s vet.Milllie is recovering in the care of Southern Shih Tzu Rescue and when she is fit and well a permanent loving home will be found for her.She is believed to be about 9/10 years old and Helen has found her to be a very sweet loving little dog.

February 26th 1998:-
Helen says that Millie has settled down really well. She sleeps by the side of Helens bed and starts every morning with a slice of ham (her favourite treat). She likes to spend her days snoozing on the sofa but is happy to go for a walk when the opportunity arises. She adores Helens grandchildren.Millie is still receiving treatment for a persistent skin condition but overall her health has improved dramatically.
